Thursday 14 September 2006 @ 8:01 am

Marcelino Botin is one half of the yacht design partnership Botin & Carkeek, which has dominated IMS racing in Spain over the past few years. His design successes in Grand Prix regattas like the Copa del Rey led to an invitation to join the design team of Emirates Team New Zealand, where he is now employed as a ‘free thinker’. Marcelino comes from a wealthy banking family, but here he explains why he chose a different career.

Victory Challenge - ready for home waters Victory Challenge - ready for home waters

Sweden’s Victory Challenge is the team with the most reason to be excited by the prospect of the Malm -Sk ne Louis Vuitton Acts 6 & 7 at the end of August. It’s an opportunity for the Swedes to show their homeland what the America’s Cup is all about, and with a strong opening performance by the team in the Valencia Louis Vuitton Acts, there’s plenty to be enthusiastic about.

Magnus Holmberg is the skipper and sailing manager of Victory Challenge. In June, he led the team to a fifth place finish in the match races of Act 4 in Valencia, and then surprised the Cup community with a dominating performance in the fleet races of Louis Vuitton Act 5. Victory would have won the regatta, but for a Jury decision on a technical issue that disqualified the team from one race. With just a few weeks of preparation, the Swedish performance in Valencia was nothing short of spectacular.

We caught up with Magnus in Valencia, where the team continues to train in preparation for the Malm -Sk ne Louis Vuitton Acts.

“The advantage that the Challengers have to race among themselves while measuring and improving their performance is a big one,” says Alinghi helmsman Peter Holmberg.

Number one - with a bullet Number one - with a bullet
If the 11 challengers for the 32nd America’s Cup thought that Alinghi was going to roll over and play dead after a sub-par 2004 season that saw it finish third behind Emirates Team New Zealand and BMW ORACLE Racing, and lose the skipper who won the past three America’s Cup Matches, the dominating performance of the Swiss Defender in 2005 must have come as a hard dose of reality.
